Lagos-Born Olaolu Wows MasterChef Australia with Bold Ofada Stew
Lagos-born brand consultant Olaolu Olorunnimbe has earned a white apron on MasterChef Australia Season 18. He secured his spot in the Top 24 with a heritage-inspired Ofada stew served alongside rice, plantain and a coconut–carrot sambal. Judge Jean-Christophe Novelli declared Olaolu’s plantain “the best I have had so far in my life.” Olaolu left Nigeria at 12 to attend school in England, where mass-catered meals replaced the flavours of home. It wasn’t until university that he revived his family recipes, and Sydney’s lockdown gave him the space to perfect them. His home kitchen pop-up for Jollof rice won rave reviews and built his confidence. Now on Australia’s most watched cooking competition, Olaolu says earning an apron feels like a miracle. He credits his family and community for shaping his culinary journey. Beyond the competition, he plans to launch a restaurant, a food truck and a line of Nigerian food products to bring home-style flavours to kitchens across Australia.
