Honouring Gani Fawehinmi: Calls to Strengthen Nigeria’s Press Freedom

Honouring Gani Fawehinmi: Calls to Strengthen Nigeria’s Press Freedom

Prominent leaders gathered in Ikeja to celebrate Gani Fawehinmi’s legacy and defend press freedom. At the Nigerian Law Publications House, they launched the book ‘Gani Fawehinmi and the Nigerian Press’. Kaduna Governor Uba Sani praised Fawehinmi’s fairness and warned against calls for military rule. Former Ondo Governor Olusegun Mimiko highlighted Fawehinmi’s vision to eliminate poverty at its roots. Human rights lawyer Femi Falana urged journalists and lawyers to summon the courage to defend democracy. Professor Akin Ibidapo-Obe examined constitutional gaps in protecting media independence and cautioned against elite influence on news outlets. The gathering served not only as a tribute to Fawehinmi’s lifelong fight for justice but also as a renewed call to safeguard civil liberties and strengthen democratic institutions in Nigeria.
