How Wike Outplayed Fubara – Learning from Ambode’s Downfall
Siminalayi Fubara’s biggest challenge wasn’t his popularity but political naivety. He underestimated the depth of Nyesom Wike’s network and overestimated the power of loyalty to leaders who saw him as expendable. Wike controls key structures in both APC and PDP in Rivers State. Any politician facing that kind of machinery cannot rely on emotional appeals. Public loyalty to President Tinubu offered Fubara little protection once usefulness became the deciding factor. A smarter strategy would have been building an independent political base outside Wike’s and Tinubu’s spheres. But new electoral rules and party restrictions closed that option. Now Fubara risks joining Ambode’s fate — toppling under entrenched power. In Nigerian politics, power is never freely given. If you can’t defend it, the political forces around you will reclaim it.
