US Confirms Hong Kong Won’t Regain Special Status After Emergency
The US government has announced that Hong Kong will not automatically get back its special trading and economic treatment once the national emergency ends. The emergency was declared in 2020 over concerns about Hong Kong’s autonomy and the enactment of the National Security Law. Washington then began treating the territory like mainland China on trade, export controls, and other regulations. US officials say lifting the emergency alone does not restore Hong Kong’s previous privileges. Any future change will require a separate policy review by the US administration.
