FG Bolsters Airport and Prison Security Amid Insurgent Plot
Security agencies have moved to reinforce protection at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Kuje Custodial Centre and the Niger State prison following intelligence of planned attacks by ISWAP, Boko Haram, Ansaru and JNIM. A leaked memo from the Customs Service dated 13 April warns that insurgents have infiltrated the Federal Capital Territory and intend to replicate earlier strikes on aviation targets in neighbouring Niger Republic. Past attacks on Kuje in 2022 and an attempted siege on Wawa Cantonment underscore the risk to critical facilities. Police, Immigration and Correctional Services say they have heightened screening, surveillance and inter-agency collaboration. Analysts urge the government to act decisively on intelligence and extend security measures to states surrounding Abuja to prevent breaches. Meanwhile, 744 ex-fighters and victims graduated from the Operation Safe Corridor de-radicalisation camp, highlighting the government’s dual approach of military action and rehabilitation to curb extremism.
