Glasgow 2026: Esther Nworgu Wins Nigeria's First Gold With Games Record

Esther Nworgu delivered a superb performance to win Team Nigeria's first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She also set a new Games record in the women’s para powerlifting lightweight event. Nworgu lifted 119.0kg to claim the top spot on the podium. Fellow Nigerian Esther Oyema took silver with 115.5kg, giving Team Nigeria a one-two finish in the event. England's Olivia Broome won bronze after lifting 106.6kg. Earlier in the day, Roland Ezuruike had secured Nigeria's first medal of the Games with silver in the men’s lightweight event, bringing Team Nigeria's opening-day tally to three medals.
