Abuja Court Issues Arrest Warrants for Lawyer and Police Officer Over Arraignment Evasion

Abuja Court Issues Arrest Warrants for Lawyer and Police Officer Over Arraignment Evasion

Justice Samira Bature of the Abuja High Court has ordered bench warrants for lawyer Victor Giwa and police officer Edith Erhunmuuse. They face charges of forceful eviction and damage to property worth ₦300 million. The judge ruled that repeated delays and medical letters submitted by Giwa were mere tactics to avoid arraignment. The third defendant has also been absent since her first appearance, despite an offer of representation from the Legal Aid Council. Prosecution counsel argued that arraignment is fundamental and cannot be stalled by pending applications. The court granted the request and adjourned for arraignment on April 29.

I'm not convinced the judge only cared about arraignment evasion; other procedural issues could be at play.

It's surprising how a ₦300 million damage claim and alleged forceful eviction case could face so many postponements.

Issuing bench warrants for missing arraignments seems heavy-handed if the defendants genuinely sought medical exemptions.

Defendants should ensure all future medical letters are properly verified by the court registrar to avoid further bench warrants.
