When My Boys Built Bottle-Cap Robots to Do My Chores

When My Boys Built Bottle-Cap Robots to Do My Chores — 1 of 8
1 / 8

My kids came home for the midterm break, and managing chores has been a challenge—especially with my two boys. My first son checked out of helping despite all my coaching. My second son still enjoys working but has started copying his elder brother. Both have needed gentle reminders to pitch in, and I’m finally seeing some improvement. Meanwhile, my daughter has been perfect at chores, so I’ve been rewarding her with praise and little gifts. Then today, my boys surprised me with homemade “robots” made from bottle caps. They say these robots will take over chores when they return to school. I’ve tried talking to them, but so far, they won’t budge. Until the robots learn their duties, the boys are back on dish washing and sweeping duty!

Have you tried involving your elder son in designing the robots as a reward for consistent chore help?

That's a great idea; letting him shape the robots could boost motivation and creativity.

It sounds clever, but might those bottle-cap robots just be a clever distraction from teaching responsibility?

Consider setting clear chore charts alongside the robot project so your boys know exactly what's expected each day.
