Atiku Wins ADC Presidential Ticket Amid Peaceful Primary, Says David Mark

Senator David Mark says the ADC’s presidential primary proves democracy and political competition can still thrive peacefully in Nigeria. At the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was declared the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. He defeated former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and ex-banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen in the contest. Official results showed Atiku scored 1,846,370 votes, Amaechi 504,117 and Hayatu-Deen 177,120, out of 2,546,457 votes cast from a total party membership of 3,113,599. Following the declaration, David Mark formally presented the ADC flag to Atiku as the party’s standard-bearer for the upcoming election.

It's notable that the ADC could pull off a calm primary, though real democratic gains require deeper reforms beyond one event.

I'm not convinced a single peaceful primary guarantees broader stability. Nigerian politics still faces many unresolved tensions.

Local party leaders should study this peaceful ADC primary model and apply its conflict-resolution steps in state and local elections.
