Is President Tinubu Really in Control of Nigeria’s Armed Forces?

I joined a heated debate when a Fulani man claimed that no tribe will ever relinquish the title of commander-in-chief. He argued that the president is merely a stooge and that real military power stays in the north, regardless of election outcomes. He pointed to security failures in Kwara and Ogun states, alleged infiltration by terror groups, and ransom payments as evidence that the presidency lacks true authority. He even questioned why requests to form regional security groups go unanswered. I can’t help but wonder if President Tinubu can assert real command over our armed forces and secure lives across Nigeria, or if true power lies somewhere above the presidency.

Do we have clear evidence that President Tinubu truly commands the armed forces, or is regional influence overshadowing official roles?

We really need concrete proof of his direct orders or troop visits before assuming regional forces haven't taken charge.

It's interesting that security failings and the Fulani argument both suggest informal power dynamics might persist irrespective of who occupies Aso Rock.

I'm not convinced no tribe will ever relinquish commander-in-chief status—power shifts with leadership, public pressure, and evolving military structures.

Civil society groups should push for transparent reporting on military budgets and chain of command to clarify who really controls the forces.
