Rethinking Xenophobia in South Africa: A Foreigner’s Perspective
I spent three years living in South Africa and formed a different view of xenophobia than you often see online. From my experience, most locals simply expect foreigners to respect laws and behave responsibly. Tensions usually come from visitors who break rules or act disrespectfully. When some Nigerians abroad are loud or dismissive, it can provoke resentment just as it would here at home. South Africans don’t want trouble or intruders. They ask for mutual respect and a safe, lawful environment—conditions any community would expect.
