Loud Criticisms, Silent Ballots: Reassessing Omoyele Sowore’s Strategy
Omoyele Sowore has long been one of Nigeria’s most vocal critics of public officials. He has challenged figures from established party leaders to emerging reformers, most recently questioning the achievements of Abia State’s governor. Yet his fiery rhetoric has not won votes. In the 2023 presidential race, he secured just 14,608 votes nationwide. Memorable campaign stunts drew attention but failed to build the alliances and grassroots networks needed for victory. I admire his courage and commitment to radical reform. But Nigeria’s elections reward organisation, resources, and strategic coalitions. President Buhari’s 2015 triumph shows how alliance-building can transform repeated defeats into success. Sowore might strengthen his movement by contesting local offices or forging partnerships with like-minded reformers. Winning smaller battles can pave the way for larger victories. Perhaps it is time for recalibration rather than repeated protests from the margins.
