Iran Declares Strait of Hormuz Open but Bars ‘Enemy’ Ships
Iran’s representative at the UN maritime body says the Strait of Hormuz is open to vessels that meet safety and security standards. He blamed US-Israeli “aggression” for the waterway’s recent closure and stressed that diplomacy and mutual trust remain Tehran’s priority. Around 20% of global seaborne oil flows through Hormuz. Iran has granted passage to friendly states like China, India, and Pakistan, but it warns that ships linked to its declared enemies will be turned away or targeted. Reports also suggest attacks on vessels and possible mine deployments. Tehran accuses the US, Israel, and their allies of destabilising the route. In response, Washington is said to be weighing a blockade of Kharg Island, and the US president has threatened to strike Iranian power plants if the strait is not reopened within 48 hours.
