12 Years On, 89 Chibok Girls Still Missing as MMF Calls Abduction a 'Metaphor for Neglect'
This week marks twelve years since 276 schoolgirls were abducted from Chibok in northeast Nigeria. Of those, 89 remain unaccounted for despite ongoing efforts. According to the Murtala Muhammed Foundation, 187 girls have either escaped, been released or rescued, and over 40 children born in captivity have since returned with their mothers. No Chibok girl has been confirmed recovered in the past year. The MMF chief executive warns that Chibok has become emblematic of a wider failure of responsibility, accountability and collective empathy. Subsequent kidnappings of schoolchildren have deepened fears and undermined confidence in education, especially for girls. The Foundation calls on the Nigerian government, United Nations and international partners to renew their commitment. Until every missing girl is found, this tragedy must remain a call to action rather than a bygone moment.
