London Police Arrest Two Over £153m TikTok Tax Scam

London Police Arrest Two Over £153m TikTok Tax Scam — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Investigators in east London have arrested two men, aged 22 and 25, accused of running a £153 million tax-fraud scheme through TikTok. They allegedly lured users into sharing personal tax details with promises of quick rewards. The stolen information was then used to lodge false claims, which HMRC blocked. HMRC warns everyone to protect tax information as carefully as bank details. Offers of “risk-free” cash in exchange for personal data are fraudulent and can leave innocent victims owing money. The two suspects were arrested on April 23 under various UK fraud and cybercrime laws. They have been released on bail and the investigation is ongoing.

What steps do you think authorities should take to protect TikTok users from schemes like this in the future?

I agree, authorities should tighten identity checks and run clear awareness campaigns about online tax scams.

It's surprising how quickly personal tax details could be exploited on a popular platform without stricter identity checks in place.

Maybe users share sensitive data too casually and platforms can only do so much if people aren't careful themselves.

Education campaigns on spotting fraud could help, alongside mandatory verification steps before anyone submits tax details online.
