‘We Faced the Best’: Mazraoui Praises Morocco’s Tough Penalty Shootout Win Over Netherlands

‘We Faced the Best’: Mazraoui Praises Morocco’s Tough Penalty Shootout Win Over Netherlands

Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui has praised his side’s gritty performance after edging the Netherlands 3-2 on penalties in Monterrey. Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock late in normal time, but Morocco’s Issa Diop headed home in extra time to force penalties. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou then saved the decisive spot-kick before Ismael Saibari fired the winner. Mazraoui called the Dutch “one of the best teams in the world” and said this victory is “a huge acknowledgement” of Morocco’s progress. The Atlas Lions now meet co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16 in Houston on July 4.

I'm not sure Mazraoui's praise is fully justified; the team only scraped through and relied heavily on that goalkeeper's saves.
