A Children’s Day Letter to Nigerian Pupils Held Captive
Dear Nigerian pupils held in captivity, we observed Children’s Day two days ago without you. I could not celebrate or watch the festivities, knowing you are in kidnappers’ dens. Though Eid al-Adha coincided with the day, my heart was heavy without you. You are gifts from God and the future of this nation. Your presence in any community ensures continuity, progress and development. Responsible governments recognize this and prioritize your safety, education and welfare. Yet here you are, kidnapped for pursuing schooling over crime. The service chiefs failed to bring you home, and our leaders offered prayers instead of decisive action. This pain is not yours alone; it reflects a leadership crisis. I believe in your safe return and in your potential to rebuild Nigeria. When you’re back, stay committed to learning, reject drugs, avoid bigotry and uphold unity. These values will shape you into the leaders we desperately need. I pray for your release and look forward to the day we celebrate together.
