FG to Host 2026 Arewa Media Summit in Kano: Shaping Journalism’s Future

The Federal Government will convene the 2026 Arewa Media Summit in Kano on July 6. Stakeholders will examine the media’s role in governance, regional development and public engagement across Northern Nigeria. Journalists, editors, broadcasters, digital content creators, communication specialists and policymakers from all 19 Northern states are expected to attend. Discussions will cover transparency, accountability, peacebuilding and strategies to combat misinformation. Sessions will also explore the impact of digital platforms and emerging technologies on journalism and civic engagement. Participants will share practical approaches to strengthen media professionalism in a rapidly evolving information landscape. Organisers say the summit aims to deepen collaboration between government institutions and media practitioners. It will produce recommendations to promote responsible journalism and support sustainable development in the North.

While collaboration is nice, expecting quick policy changes from a single summit overlooks the slow pace of federal decision-making in Nigeria's media sector.
