16 Years Without Electricity: Itapaji-Ekiti Monarch’s Plea to Government

16 Years Without Electricity: Itapaji-Ekiti Monarch’s Plea to Government

Itapaji-Ekiti is a peaceful rural town in Ikole LGA. Its lush farmland, friendly people and close-knit community life make it charming despite its remote location. The community first lost public electricity in 2010 after a storm damaged power poles. Since then, residents have relied on generators and solar. Repeated petitions to the state government and a brief ceremonial generator commission have failed to restore supply. The traditional ruler recalls that Itapaji once had public water before many Ekiti towns. He also notes a newly tarred road and regular civil service pay as rare improvements. However, the local primary school still struggles with only five teachers. On the bright side, the town enjoys religious harmony and has been largely spared bandit attacks.

Forming a cooperative to fund solar microgrids might offer a sustainable alternative until the national grid reaches Itapaji-Ekiti again.
