JAMB to Let UTME Candidates Use Personal Laptops from 2027

JAMB to Let UTME Candidates Use Personal Laptops from 2027

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced that UTME candidates can use their personal laptops and devices from 2027 under a new “Bring Your Own Device” policy. Special flash drives will secure the exams and help curb malpractice. According to Registrar Ishaq Oloyede, this change will make the process cheaper, more reliable, and address complaints about computers shutting down mid-exam. JAMB plans further technology upgrades before 2027 to ensure a smoother testing experience across the country. The board also released the top performers in the 2026 UTME. Jesudunsin Owoeye from Ekiti State led with 372 marks, choosing Medicine and Surgery at the University of Lagos. Ikenna Enwere scored 370 and will study Computer Science at Nile University, while Ayomide Bamisile scored 369 and opted for Software Engineering at FUTA.

How do you think BYOD will change students' prep and performance in UTME when laptops are allowed?

True, letting candidates use their own laptops will boost familiarization with digital tools and help them practice timed tests more effectively.

Special flash drives are meant to secure exams, but I'm not convinced they can truly curb malpractice across thousands of candidates.

True, flash drives sound secure on paper, but scaling that for thousands still feels more hope than practical solution.

Allowing personal devices might just shift cheating methods instead of preventing them, suggesting flash drives alone won't fix all security concerns.

Schools should run pilot tests with a small group before full rollout, checking device compatibility, security software, and student support needs.
