UNESCO Commends Enugu’s Smart Schools, Pledges Teacher Training and Cultural Support

UNESCO Commends Enugu’s Smart Schools, Pledges Teacher Training and Cultural Support — 1 of 4
1 / 4

UNESCO’s Nigeria representative visited Enugu to commend Governor Peter Mbah’s Smart Schools initiative. He described it as transformative and pledged a strategic partnership on teacher training, digital education development, and Igbo cultural preservation. The organisation is already running a $5 million education support programme in six states, including Enugu. As part of the plan, UNESCO will train 2,183 teachers in ICT and digital pedagogy to strengthen capacity alongside new infrastructure. Governor Mbah highlighted that over 30% of the state budget goes to education. He noted the establishment of 267 Smart Green Schools, 7,000 new classrooms, curriculum reform, and a Centre for Experiential Learning to equip teachers with modern skills. On cultural heritage, UNESCO has upgraded security at the National Museum in Enugu and is ready to help nominate sites like the Nsude pyramids as World Heritage. Both parties agreed to deepen collaboration across education and culture.

I admit the pledge feels promising, but I'm skeptical it will change students' everyday routines that fast.

UNESCO's praise sounds promising, but often such partnerships struggle with actual implementation beyond the initial fanfare.

I'm not convinced that teacher training alone can address longstanding infrastructure gaps in these schools without more concrete funding assurances.

Schools should establish monitoring teams to track progress on digital tools and cultural programs, ensuring UNESCO's initiatives translate into measurable outcomes.
