Chelle Blames Draws with Zimbabwe and South Africa for Super Eagles’ 2026 World Cup Exit
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has pinpointed two key matches that derailed Nigeria’s bid for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He cited the 1-1 home draw with Zimbabwe in Uyo and the 1-1 away draw against South Africa in Bloemfontein as the decisive dropped points. Despite rallying to reach the African play-offs, Nigeria fell to the Democratic Republic of Congo in a penalty shootout. “When I arrived, Nigeria had only three points from four games,” Chelle explained in an interview. “Those two draws hurt us and ultimately cost us automatic qualification.” Chelle says he will use the lessons learned to strengthen the Super Eagles ahead of future campaigns.
