Remembering Henry Nwosu: Farewell to the ‘Youngest Millionaire’ of Nigerian Football

Remembering Henry Nwosu: Farewell to the ‘Youngest Millionaire’ of Nigerian Football — 1 of 2
1 / 2

I still recall nicknaming Henry Nwosu the ‘Youngest Millionaire’ after AFCON 1980. At just out of secondary school, he became the first in our team to earn a million Naira — a figure that once seemed impossible. On the pitch, Henry was a midfield general. His diminutive frame belied fearless dribbling, powerful shots, and legendary bicycle kicks. He rose through the junior ranks to captain the Flying Eagles, then matched seasoned internationals in the Super Eagles. Henry’s playing career spanned over a decade, including standout performances at the 1984 and 1988 AFCON tournaments. He later ventured into coaching alongside Chief Adegboye Onigbinde’s consortium for the 2002 World Cup, though coaching never matched his playing glory. Henry battled a heart condition in recent years. On March 14, 2026, he passed away. As we plan his burial on June 6, 2026, I appeal to sports authorities and philanthropic Nigerians to help give him the fitting farewell he deserves.

It seems nearly impossible that a teenager earned a full million Naira in 1980—maybe that figure grew over time with endorsements.

Naming him the 'Youngest Millionaire' feels like a PR angle rather than an honest reflection of what he actually pocketed.

Current youth academies should offer financial literacy classes so rising stars can manage sudden earnings wisely.
