Premier League Panel: Gabriel Magalhães Should Have Been Sent Off vs Man City

Premier League Panel: Gabriel Magalhães Should Have Been Sent Off vs Man City — 1 of 2
1 / 2

The Premier League’s independent Key Match Incidents panel has ruled that Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães should have received a straight red card in last month’s 2-1 loss at Manchester City. In the 82nd minute, Gabriel reacted after Erling Haaland pushed him. As they separated, he thrust his head toward Haaland’s face. Referee Anthony Taylor only issued yellow cards, and VAR did not intervene. By a 3–2 vote, the five-person panel deemed Gabriel’s extra head movement violent conduct warranting dismissal. Yet four members felt it fell short of a “clear and obvious error” requiring VAR review. Had he been sent off, Gabriel would have served a three-match ban, a blow to Arsenal’s defensive line and their Premier League title bid under Mikel Arteta.

Do you think the panel got it right deciding Magalhães deserved a straight red card against City?

True, that challenge was rough well well, so panel did right by showing straight red.

Not sure that tackle was red-card level. A yellow might've been fairer here.

It seems the panel might be applying rules inconsistently if similar fouls weren't punished the same way.

I'm not convinced that slight shirt tug and reaction warranted straight red. Fans see tougher challenges go unpunished.

Teams should train players on maintaining composure under pressure to reduce risk of needless dismissals in critical game moments.
