CSOs Warn Underfunded Agencies Are Undermining Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Fight
A coalition of civil society groups has urged President Tinubu and the National Assembly to tackle the crippling underfunding of Nigeria’s anti-corruption bodies. They highlighted that key institutions like the ICPC struggle across 36 states, the FCT and 774 LGAs due to inadequate budgets, delayed fund releases, staff shortages and outdated infrastructure. These gaps have slowed investigations, weakened prosecutions and eroded public trust. The groups also warned that rising financial crimes—procurement fraud, money laundering, cyber manipulation and shell companies—demand modern forensic and cybercrime capabilities currently lacking in Nigeria. Calling for urgent reforms, they recommended timely and full budget releases, mass recruitment of specialists, digital forensics tools, better staff welfare, civic education and a Presidential Capacity Enhancement Initiative to strengthen prevention and restore confidence.
