Why Nigerian Schools Must Teach Consent and Boundaries
I recently watched a clip of a man teaching boys about consent and boundaries. It made me wonder what impact such lessons would have if they were part of our formal curriculum. Our classrooms still teach blame instead of boundaries and shame instead of consent. Social studies should train students how to respect bodily autonomy and interact with empathy. Lessons on consent and boundaries belong in every school year: ages 4–7 should learn “my body belongs to me,” ages 8–11 discuss safe and unsafe touch, ages 12–14 define true consent, and ages 15–18 cover harassment, assault laws, and supporting survivors. Humanity studies must build empathy, not force us to memorize dates. We need to reject victim-blaming messages like “cover up to avoid rape.” True change starts when we question harmful lies and demand a better education.
