FIFA Orders Haiti to Redesign World Cup Jersey Over Revolutionary Imagery
Haiti’s kit maker was asked to change a new jersey just days before their opening match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The original design featured silhouettes of the Battle of Vertières, a key moment in Haiti’s fight for independence. FIFA deemed the war scene a breach of its equipment regulations and requested edits. Saeta, the manufacturer, worked closely with FIFA and the Haitian Football Federation to adjust the artwork. The final jersey still honours Haiti’s spirit and the revolutionary legacy, with home, away, and third kits in blue, white, and red. Every 18 May, Haiti celebrates Flag Day to mark when Jean-Jacques Dessalines tore the white band from the French flag in 1803. This moment inspired the contested hip design on the original shirt, but FIFA’s rules meant it had to be modified before the tournament kick-off.
