Igbo Top Nigerian Ethnicities, Rank 4th in Africa by HDI & MPI

Igbo rank fourth among African ethnic groups when combining the Human Development Index (HDI) and Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). They are the highest-ranked Nigerian group in this assessment. According to the UNDP Human Development Report 2023 and the Global MPI 2025, Igbo record an HDI of 0.701 (6th) and an MPI of 0.0266 (3rd). Their poverty headcount is 6.2% with a deprivation intensity of 42.7%. Only Algerian Arabs, Egyptian Arabs, and Morocco’s Amazigh sit above them on the list. This ranking highlights the Igbo’s strong performance in health, education, and income dimensions.
