Earning ₦150k with Two Kids: How Can Families Afford These Skyrocketing Market Prices?

Since my wife gave birth to our second child, I’ve had to visit the market myself. When our first child arrived, two of her sisters shopped for us, but this time only her mother came for omugwo. I’ve been to the market three Saturdays in a row and the prices are shocking. A kilo of meat now costs around ₦40,000. Eggs that used to be affordable are nearly ₦7,000 per carton. Before COVID, a live broiler chicken went for ₦1,500–2,000; now it’s ₦15,000–20,000. A recent trip to a supermarket left me with a bill over ₦50,000 for a bag barely filled. I’m based in the North, where food is said to be cheaper. If it’s this bad here, what do families in the South face? Any family earning ₦150k or less with two or three children is truly below the poverty line. May God help us in this country.

I'm not sure if getting help with omugwo makes a big difference when market prices are unpredictable.

Try bulk buying grains from wholesalers on market day before prices rise again, then store at home.
