Norris Takes Hungarian GP Pole as Hamilton Drops to Fifth After Penalty
Lando Norris took pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix after a tense qualifying session at the Hungaroring. The McLaren driver edged Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, while Oscar Piastri moved up to third after a penalty for Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton originally qualified second but was handed a three-place grid penalty for unnecessarily impeding Piastri at Turn 1. The stewards found that Piastri, on a flying lap, had to take avoiding action and abandon the lap. Hamilton will now start fifth. The session also featured a late spin from Max Verstappen and a yellow flag caused by George Russell stopping at Turn 1. Norris said McLaren’s upgrades had helped and that pole position was especially valuable at the tight Budapest circuit. The revised top five is Norris, Leclerc, Piastri, Verstappen and Hamilton.
