Court of Appeal President Calls for NJI’s Elevation to Judicial University

Court of Appeal President Calls for NJI’s Elevation to Judicial University

At the farewell lunch for Justice Hamma Barka, Court of Appeal President Monica Dongban-Mensem urged the Chief Justice to upgrade the National Judicial Institute into a full-fledged Judicial University. She explained that this change would tap retired jurists to mentor the next generation of judges. It would also reduce the high cost of overseas training. Justice Barka, who retires on 17 April after reaching the mandatory age of 70, was praised for his remarkable legacy and fatherly leadership. The president wished him good health and success in his next chapter. Mrs. Dongban-Mensem also highlighted the recent Special Sitting that involved 21 panels and 63 justices. A total of 330 civil, criminal and commercial appeals were heard across the headquarters and designated Federal Capital Territory courtrooms. She thanked all partners and colleagues for their support.

Turning NJI into full university might end up duplicating existing law faculties, and e fit scatter focus from improving current training modules.

A phased upgrade could work: start with advanced certification courses at NJI and assess impact before establishing a full-fledged university.
