Matawalle Rules Out 2027 Zamfara Bid, Pledges Full Support to Governor Lawal

Matawalle Rules Out 2027 Zamfara Bid, Pledges Full Support to Governor Lawal

Former Zamfara governor and current Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has announced he will not contest the 2027 governorship. He threw his full weight behind Governor Dauda Lawal during a grand reception in Gusau on 24 March 2026. The event, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Trade Fair Complex, brought together all past and present Zamfara governors under one political platform for the first time. Matawalle described the occasion as historic and praised the unity on display. Highlighting the APC’s decisive win over the PDP in Zamfara during the 2023 presidential election, Matawalle urged party stakeholders to rally behind Lawal ahead of 2027. The reception also featured endorsements by leading legislators and saw thousands of supporters lining the streets in a show of solidarity.

I wonder what motivated Matawalle's decision not to run again in 2027. Could it reshape party strategies in Zamfara ahead of the next election?

I dey feel you, this move fit really shake up party playbook for Zamfara's next election.

That's a fair point, it's hard to gauge the party's next move without his candidacy.

It's interesting he pledges support but gave up on his own ambitions. That kind of sudden loyalty shift leaves room for political speculation.

Is full support really enough to sway voters? Past alliances here haven't always translated into election wins or smoother governance.

Local leaders should use this endorsement moment to coordinate real development projects, ensuring campaign promises soon translate into tangible improvements for Zamfara communities.
