JAMB Clarifies Benue Kidnap Victims Were Police Recruits, Not UTME Candidates

JAMB Clarifies Benue Kidnap Victims Were Police Recruits, Not UTME Candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has denied claims that the travellers abducted on the Makurdi–Otukpo road were 2026 UTME candidates. A spokesperson said the victims were actually returning from a police recruitment exercise in Otukpo. JAMB criticised the spread of unverified reports linking the abductions to its exam schedule. It noted that UTME candidates do not travel together in commercial vehicles to the same centre. The Benue State Police Command confirmed the passengers were ordinary travellers, not exam participants. Security agencies have freed some abductees while efforts continue to rescue the remaining victims.

Did anyone else notice JAMB's quick response correcting the identity of those abducted as police recruits rather than UTME candidates?

Would that correction have any real impact on the investigations into the kidnapping?

Social media can spread misleading stories fast. JAMB's clarification shows how easily misinformation about UTME candidates can gain traction.

I'm not convinced this was just a casual error by everyone sharing the mix-up. There must be deeper issues with fact checking protocols.

News outlets and users should double-check sources before posting. Verifying statements with official spokespeople could prevent unnecessary panic in the future.
