Tinubu’s Hidden Leverage: INEC Chairman’s Pre-Signed Resignation Letter

Legal scholar Professor Chidi Odinkalu alleges that before Professor Joash Amupitan assumed office as INEC chairman, he was forced to sign a resignation letter. Odinkalu says this pre-signed letter was used to pressure Amupitan into withdrawing recognition from the African Democratic Congress leadership. He points out that INEC’s intervention came about 60 hours after top officials met with the Presidency, Appeal Court justices, and the Federal High Court. Odinkalu criticises INEC for interpreting a Court of Appeal verdict instead of seeking judicial clarification. He warns of a coordinated effort by INEC, parts of the judiciary, and the ruling party to stifle competition ahead of the 2027 elections. He fears only the PDP will be allowed to run against the incumbents, putting Nigeria’s electoral credibility at risk. I’ve told Nigerians not to waste their energy on the 2027 election under this government. Only a revolution leading to total decentralisation or even disintegration can free us from these retrogressive leaders.

It's surprising that such a serious allegation came up only after Joash Amupitan took office, raising questions about internal pressure tactics.

Hold on—wouldn't it be simpler if the resignation letter was standard procedure rather than a political threat? Context seems missing here.

Citizens should insist that INEC publishes its protocols for resignation letters and establishes clear safeguards to prevent undue influence on top officials.
