El-Rufai Trial: NSA and ICPC Verify Leaked Call, Ex-Governor Denies Interception
The Federal High Court in Abuja resumed the trial of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. A prosecution witness told the court that the National Security Adviser and the ICPC chairman both confirmed the authenticity of a private conversation El-Rufai referenced in a TV interview. Prosecutors played the 43-minute Arise TV interview in which El-Rufai said the call was intercepted and sent to him. They argue his remarks amount to an open confession of unlawful interception under the Cybercrimes Amendment Act 2024. Under cross-examination, El-Rufai’s lawyer highlighted that investigators never examined devices, secured IP addresses, or ran forensic tests. The witness also agreed that the former governor never said he personally intercepted the call. Justice Abdulmalik adjourned the case until June 22 and 23. The proceedings have sparked debate over whether the charges are driven by security concerns or political motives ahead of 2027.
