Jeremy Doku Faces Backlash for Choosing Family Over World Cup

Belgium winger Jeremy Doku has asked to leave his national team’s World Cup camp to be present for the birth of his first child in July. The Manchester City forward says he understands football’s demands but believes no one should miss such a personal milestone. French sports presenter France Pierron criticised his choice, calling a father “completely useless” at childbirth. Her remarks sparked widespread anger online, with many defending Doku’s decision. Former Olympic boxer Brahim Asloum wrote, “A baby is your entire life. A World Cup is over when it is over.” Pierron later issued an apology for any hurt caused, stressing she did not mean to minimise a father’s role. One forum user noted that her personal opinion might have been better kept private and argued that most fathers work hard to support their families. Belgium also confirmed Doku will miss their next World Cup match due to illness.
