How Leadership Decisions Shaped Nigeria’s Foundations
I laughed when people tell me not to discuss leaders who laid a poor foundation for Nigeria. Building a country requires a solid base for future generations. Under Pa Awolowo’s regional government, the Yoruba people benefited from free education and medical care. But in 1966, the eastern region scrapped regional autonomy and imposed a unitary system. That move and the civil war that followed changed our governance structure forever. After the war, General Gowon appointed Awolowo finance minister and they transformed Lagos into a mini-London. But in 1976, General Obasanjo reversed many regional structures and nationalised key boards. Subsequent civilian leaders struggled with corruption and poor management. Now, I believe President Tinubu is seeking to restore merit-based leadership. I welcome that change. Feel free to challenge my view, but I won’t stop dissecting our political history.
