FG Sets Up High-Level Committee to Streamline Security Agencies

The Federal Government has launched a major review of Nigeria’s security architecture. A new committee will examine the roles of the Police, DSS, NSCDC and other para-military bodies. The panel will compile an inventory of all security outfits and scrutinise their legal mandates. It will identify overlaps, operational gaps and recommend mergers, restructuring or the dissolution of redundant agencies. Membership cuts across defence, police affairs, interior ministry and the Office of the National Security Adviser. The committee is expected to submit actionable reforms that could reshape Nigeria’s security system.

Review panels can get stuck in bureaucracy—past committees barely implemented their recommendations, so I wonder how this one will break that pattern.

Is merging mandates really the solution, or are we just delaying action by piling up more committees instead of improving existing agencies?

They should set clear timelines and performance metrics for each security outfit to ensure this review leads to concrete reforms and better public safety.
