Ghana Condemns Canada’s Visa Denial for Partey Ahead of World Cup Clash

Ghana Condemns Canada’s Visa Denial for Partey Ahead of World Cup Clash

Ghana’s foreign ministry has formally protested Canada’s refusal to issue a visa to Black Stars vice-captain Thomas Partey ahead of their Group L opener. The statement called the border decision “high-handed and extremely unfair,” noting that relying on unproven UK charges without a court verdict raises questions of proportionality. Canada’s immigration service stood by its rules, emphasising that World Cup hosting does not override local laws. FIFA also clarified it cannot intervene in host-country visa decisions. Partey remains with Ghana’s Boston base on his valid US clearance and is set to feature against England and Croatia in the remaining Group L matches.

How might this decision affect Ghana's World Cup readiness and fan morale ahead of such a key match?

Agreed. Missing a key player at this stage could unsettle preparations and leave fans feeling uneasy before such an important match.

Seems odd Canada would act on unverified UK charges without sharing evidence publicly, makes you question the fairness.

Possible, but maybe Canada's handling of visa rules follows internal policy we don't see.

I'm not so sure protests will change anything in time; perhaps focusing frustration on Canadian fans is unfair to them.

Ghana should gather all diplomatic records and press statements, then engage major media outlets to highlight the inconsistencies in Canada's decision.
