Lagos Rescues 1,315 Vulnerable People, Prosecutes 459 Beggars in New Rehabilitation Drive
Lagos State Government has removed 1,315 vulnerable individuals from the streets and prosecuted 459 beggars through mobile courts. The operation rescued 587 street beggars, 560 mentally challenged persons, 143 destitute adults and 25 children. Rescued persons are receiving medical care, psychosocial support and vocational training at state rehabilitation centres. The Kick Against Drug Abuse initiative also works with schools, communities and security agencies to tackle substance abuse. In the same period, the Child Protection Unit recorded 1,437 cases and carried out over 5,700 interventions. High-profile rescues included children suffering abuse and neglect in viral videos. Offending caregivers have been arrested, arraigned and placed under judicial review.
