Revealing Misplaced Priorities in Nigeria’s 2025 Budget

Nigeria’s national budget is an estimate of revenue and expenses for the coming year. We run perpetual deficits and must borrow heavily, so every naira should count. The Appropriation Act authorises government spending and assigns funds to specific sectors. Nigerians demand transparency and accountability more than ever. A review of the 2025 Act exposes a troubling mindset. The Presidency budgets more for cars than federal polytechnics in Enugu, Borno and Kano combined. The Ministry of Youth plans higher spending on furniture maintenance than on youth centres and mental health programmes. Many agencies still allocate millions for office furniture and computers with no tangible results. The environment committee warns that low funding and misplaced priorities threaten future generations. Strong oversight and respect for the budget process are essential to protect citizens’ welfare.

I'm not convinced reallocating funds alone will close deficits without boosting revenue through better tax collection.

A realistic step could be publishing quarterly spending reports and opening procurement to competitive bids to stretch every naira.
