Ebola Outbreak Reaches Militia-Held South Kivu in DR Congo
An Ebola epidemic in eastern DR Congo has spread into South Kivu province, now under control of the M23 militia. Over 130 deaths have been reported, and the World Health Organization has declared the situation an international health emergency. Authorities say the latest case involved a 28-year-old who travelled from Kisangani. Tests confirmed infection with the rare Bundibugyo strain, and a burial was conducted under strict safety protocols. No approved vaccine or treatment currently exists for this strain. Ongoing fighting between Congolese forces and the M23 rebels is hindering the outbreak response. Nearly 600 suspected cases have been recorded across Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. The crisis has forced the national football team to cancel its World Cup training camp and prompted several countries to introduce stricter airport screening or travel restrictions.
