Ethiopian Marathon Star Yebrgual Melese Dies During Training Before Canada Race
Ethiopian long-distance runner Yebrgual Melese has died at 36 after suffering a sudden medical emergency while training in Addis Ababa. She was preparing for an Ottawa marathon scheduled for May 24 when she fell ill and was rushed to hospital on May 12. Local reports say medics were unable to save her. Melese won the Houston, Shanghai and Prague Marathons in her career. Her 2:19:33 finish in Dubai 2018 ranks her 13th on the women’s all-time marathon list, and she was runner-up at the 2015 Boston Marathon. The Ethiopian Athletics Federation expressed deep sorrow over her passing and offered condolences to her family, friends and fans.
