Professor Nwaeze Slams Otti’s Transparency Gaps and Political Hostility in Abia
Abia‐born economist Professor Nnamdi Nwaeze has warned that a lack of transparency and rising political intolerance under Governor Alex Otti could weaken governance in the state. He argued that every naira spent must deliver clear value, yet opaque contract valuations and procurement processes have created uncertainty over how public funds are managed. While he did not allege outright misappropriation, Professor Nwaeze said unanswered questions about public spending continue to cast doubt on fiscal accountability. He also cautioned that dissenting voices now face personal attacks and character assassination, which stifles constructive criticism. Although he did not support Otti in the 2023 elections, the academic maintained he could reconsider his position based on future performance. He defended his right to free expression and called on all stakeholders in Abia’s political space to embrace tolerance, accountability, and open dialogue. He concluded by noting that despite receiving over ₦1.6 trillion from the federal government, Abia State shows limited tangible development, underscoring the need for greater oversight and transparency.
