FG Declares June 12 a National Holiday for Democracy Day

The Federal Government has announced Friday, June 12, as a public holiday to mark Democracy Day. Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said June 12 honours the courage and sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for democratic governance. A statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary noted the day’s historical significance and the administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and the rule of law. Dr. Tunji-Ojo also emphasised the need for strong security measures to protect lives and property. He urged Nigerians to use the holiday for civic reflection, uphold democratic institutions and recommit to national unity.

Declaring June 12 a holiday is symbolic, but it won't automatically teach citizens about the sacrifices made for democracy over the years.

A single holiday seems too little to honour decades of struggle. Maybe actual civic education would reflect more commitment than another public day off.

Use the holiday as an opportunity for community events that teach local history, hold debates, and connect citizens with the meaning of democracy.
