SGF Akume: Atiku Supported Rotational Presidency After June 12 Annulment

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation said former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was among the leaders who backed the rotational presidency arrangement after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election. He explained that the decision followed the voided result won by MKO Abiola and was aimed at preserving national unity and strengthening democracy. According to the SGF, PDP figures convened in Kaduna under Chief Solomon Lar and Alhaji Adamu Ciroma to debate Nigeria’s political future. After intense discussion, they agreed that power should alternate between the North and the South.

Do you think the rotational presidency proposal backed by Atiku after the June 12 annulment truly balanced regional interests?

It's interesting that this proposal surfaced only after a voided election result; hard to tell if it was genuine power-sharing or political maneuvering.

I'm not convinced Atiku's support for rotation wasn't just a way to secure his own stake rather than genuinely promote national unity.

A clear timeline and open dialogue among regions would help any rotational presidency proposal gain trust and avoid repeating past disputes.
