El-Rufai Petitions CJN to Reassign Kaduna Trial Over Alleged Judicial Bias

Former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has asked Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun to transfer his ongoing Federal High Court trial in Kaduna away from Justice R. M. Aikawa. In an April 9, 2026 petition, he cited multiple complaints of bias against Justice Aikawa now before the Federal High Court’s Chief Judge and the National Judicial Council. He warned that continuing under the same judge could erode public confidence and jeopardise the process at the appellate level. El-Rufai urged the CJN to assign another judge—within or outside the Kaduna division—and to refer the conduct issues to the NJC for review. There has been no official response from the judiciary as of this report.
