Austria Bars US Military Flights Over Neutral Airspace
Austria has refused US requests to use its airspace for operations linked to the war with Iran. Under its long-standing neutrality policy, Vienna denies transit or overflight of any military aircraft directly or indirectly involved in active conflicts. The decision adds Austria to a growing list of European countries, including Spain and Italy, that have limited US military access amid tensions over the Middle East campaign. Although not a NATO member, Austria’s central position in Europe makes its airspace strategically important for flights between Western Europe and the region. A defense ministry spokesperson confirmed that every request tied to combat support has been denied in consultation with the foreign affairs ministry. This stance is rooted in Austria’s post-World War II neutrality laws, which prohibit providing military support to any party in an active conflict. It remains unclear whether the United States will seek alternative routes through other European countries or respond formally to Austria’s decision.
