Split Opposition Puts Tinubu Ahead in 2027 Presidential Race

A new forecast from a political data firm shows President Bola Tinubu leading the field for 2027. It highlights how three separate opposition tickets divide the anti-incumbent vote, while the President’s support remains consolidated. Under Nigeria’s electoral rules, a candidate needs the largest share and at least 25% in 24 states plus Abuja. In 2023, Tinubu won with just 36.6% because his rivals split more than 60% of the vote among them. The same pattern is re-emerging for 2027. The forecast argues that only a merger of opposition tickets can turn the contest into a two-way race driven by Tinubu’s low approval ratings.
