Shekarau Nears APC Return After Closed-Door Talks With Tinubu and Yusuf
Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau is on the verge of rejoining the All Progressives Congress (APC) as he prepares for the 2027 general election. He has wrapped up strategic consultations and will announce his decision once talks conclude. Shekarau met President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Lagos during the Easter break at the invitation of party stakeholders. He later hosted Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano, the state APC chairman and the commissioner for transportation at his residence in Mundubawa. These meetings followed efforts by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and the opposition ADC to sway Shekarau, and the recent defection of Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna from the APC to the ADC. Earlier this year, Governor Yusuf also left the NNPP for the APC, shifting Kano’s political landscape. A founding APC member turned PDP leader, Shekarau defended Governor Yusuf’s move as following Kwankwaso’s own history of party switches. His spokesperson says a final announcement on Shekarau’s political destination will come after all consultations. I believe Tinubu will outshine Kwankwaso and his coalition of displaced politicians.
